Many of the drives today are 4K however operating in 512 byte emulation mode. #1 Correct the drives work in either 4K or 512 byte sector modes, you select one or the other, requires a reformat to make the change. #0 No worries, when you get a chance post the make/model to do some comparisons, I use the 2TB external aka portable drives for sending stuff off-site and as part of that do large file copies, so curious which ones you have. As stated in the original post, both source drives transfer between each other up to 220MB/s and to other externals up to thks 4 extra info: The source drives are a Samsung 840 Evo SSD and a 3TB Seagate Barracuda connected to the Mobo via SATAIII cables and ports. Transferring these files to properly working drives works flawlessly.Ĥ. I have many video files of size 500MB to 4GB. Using simple copy/paste, file history to copy files. The computer has a USB 3.0 PCIe card which the drives are plugged into. 512B and 4K are the physical sector sizes which, correct me if I'm wrong, cannot be changed.Ģ. The drives are at home, so I can't get the model numbers at the moment. TL DR Drive starts fast, but quickly slows to turtle speeds. None of the drives have been very heavily used, so I don't think it's normal wear-and-tear. I've noticed this with two different 2TB ExpansionDesk drives (both with the 4K sectors), but I can't figure out why. Between the internal drives, the transfer speed is around 200-220MB/s, and to other external drives, the transfer stays steadily above 120MB/s. I've tried doing transfers from both internal drives on my computer to the external. I know it's not the computer multiple other external hard drives work perfectly fine (including the same model older drive with 512B sectors). What happens is, when I do a large file copy like a backup or click/drag, the transfer speed starts out well over 100MB/s (around 180MB/s, I can't remember exactly), but, within a minute the transfer speed slows to an absolute crawl (6MB/s tops).
All drives are USB 3.0, and I use all of them with a homemade Windows 8 pc. Anyone else had trouble with 2TB Seagate ExpansionDesk external hard drives? I've got three of them (old one has 512B sectors, new ones have 4K sectors), and the newer ones with the larger physical sectors seem to have issues with speed.
